Ingredients
Let’s take a look at what you’ll need to make this easy, customizable treat.
- Chocolate (or Candy Melts): I like Ghirardelli Melting Wafers because they taste good and melt smooth. But you can use what you like best.
- Oreo Cookies: Here’s the fun part – you can use any flavor of Oreo cookie you like. So go for classic, golden, mint – it’s up to you.
- Toppings: Here’s another creative twist! Top them with sprinkles for color and texture, crushed nuts or cookie crumbs, chocolate drizzle, etc.
How to Make Chocolate Covered Oreos
Like these chocolate covered pretzels, all you need to do here is melt, dip, and set.
I suggest using two forks to keep your fingers clean!
1. PREP. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Have any toppings ready so you can add them before the chocolate sets.
2. MELT. Microwave the chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each spin, until smooth and melted.
3. DIP. Drop an Oreo into the bowl and use two forks to flip and coat. Carefully lift the Oreo out of the chocolate and gently tap off the excess.
4. COAT. Transfer the Oreo to the baking sheet and quickly sprinkle with your choice of toppings.
5. SET. Place the tray in the fridge for 20-30 minutes or until the chocolate is firm.
6. SERVE. Devour your homemade chocolate covered Oreos!
Tips for Success
Here are some handy tips to make your chocolate-covered Oreos a guaranteed hit.
- Choose high-quality chocolate. It ensures a glossy, smooth finish. If you use chocolate chips, add a small amount of coconut oil so it stays shiny.
- Stir the chocolate well. Work in 30-second intervals and stop heating when most of the chocolate is melted. Stir constantly and use the residual heat to melt the rest.
- Work in batches. If you’re making a lot, I suggest melting half of the chocolate needed. That way, you can dip and decorate without it setting. Then, melt the rest and repeat.
- Scrape excess chocolate. Remove extra chocolate from the cookie’s bottom for visual appeal.
- Double-dip. For a richer chocolate layer, consider a second dip after the first has set.
- Half-and-half dipping: For a pretty presentation, half dip in dark chocolate, set, then dip the other half in white or milk.
Recipe Variations
You might not think it, but there are a bunch of ways to make these your own.
Here are some of my go-to variations:
- Chocolate drizzle. After the base layer sets, drizzle the Oreos with a different type of chocolate. Adds more texture and a decorative touch.
- Use different Oreos. Experiment with Oreo varieties like peanut butter or double stuf to keep things interesting.
- Personalize with toppings. Nuts, crushed cookies, chocolate drizzle, caramel drizzle, peanut butter, nonpareils, sea salt, crushed pretzels, coconut flakes, dried fruit – the list goes on.
- Make them colorful. Use colored candy melts to make them more festive!
- Make Oreo pops. Carefully insert a cake pop stick into the cookie, then dip them.
How Long Do Chocolate Covered Oreos Last?
In my house, maybe 5 minutes? But in case you have leftovers, here’s how to keep them fresh:
To Store: Keep cookies in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 weeks.
To Freeze: Store cookies in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Then, set them out at room temperature to thaw.
