This is a list of my favorite milk substitutes for Hamburger Helper.
1. Cream Cheese
With its creaminess and wonderfully tangy flavor, cream cheese is a great substitution!
This is especially true if you like a really rich sauce.
Cream cheese is also nice because it’s fairly low in lactose. So if you’re sensitive to dairy, but not allergic, this is great for you!
The best part is that you can use flavored cream cheese!
Garlic and herbs, chives, or jalapeño cream cheese are delicious choices.
Substitution Ratio: Substitute 1/2 block of cream cheese (about 4 ounces) for 1 cup of milk. Add water to thin, as needed.
2. Water
Most Hamburger Helper recipes already require water for the sauce.
A sauce made with only water will not be particularly creamy, but that’s okay! It will still taste pretty darn amazing!
If you want it to be creamier, just add a little cheese for some gooey goodness.

Just be sure to add it towards the end of your cooking time. Sour cream is surprisingly low-fat.
That means that it will split if heated for too long.
Substitution Ratio: Substitute an equal amount of sour cream for milk. 1 cup sour cream = 1 cup milk. Add water to thin, as needed.
5. Vegan Milk
If you’re dairy-free, you have plenty of delicious milk substitutes to choose from!
Personally, I love oat milk and almond milk, but you can use whatever one you like best.
Just be sure to get the unsweetened and unflavored version.
Substitution Ratio: Substitute an equal amount of vegan milk for milk. 1 cup vegan milk= 1 cup milk.
6. Butter
Who doesn’t love butter? And luckily for us, it works really well as a milk substitute.
It will make your sauce extra rich, creamy, and delicious!
Substitution Ratio: Substitute 1 stick of butter (1/2 cup) for 1 cup of milk.
7. Powdered Milk
Powdered milk is just milk, but it’s been dehydrated for long-term shelf stability.
Therefore, it’s a good idea to always have some on hand.
All you have to do is rehydrate it. Follow the directions on the package and you’re good to go!
Substitution Ratio: Substitute an equal amount of rehydrated powdered milk for milk. 1 cup rehydrated powdered milk= 1 cup milk.
8. Cream
Sometimes, I skip the milk and just use cream!
That’s because it tastes utterly divine. And it makes the sauce super-duper silky.
Heavy cream or double cream work very well. Do not use pre-sweetened whipped cream.
Substitution Ratio: Substitute an equal amount of cream for milk. 1 cup cream= 1 cup milk.
For a lighter sauce, substitute an equal amount of cream and water for milk. 1/2 cup cream + 1/2 cup water= 1 cup milk.
9. Evaporated Milk
Evaporated milk is another shelf-stable milk substitute that’s great to have on hand.
It’s a little thicker than milk, so your sauce will be extra creamy, but it won’t change the flavor at all!
