Michelada Recipe (Easy Mexican Cocktail) garnidhed with lime wheel

You’ll love this refreshing blend of bubbly beer and zesty lime with a kick of hot sauce.

It’s the perfect way to add some spice to your usual drink lineup.

Whether you’re lounging poolside on a hot summer day or throwing a backyard bash, it’s a game-changer.

What Is a Michelada?

A Michelada is a beer cocktail from Mexico.

It mixes a bubbly Mexican lager with tangy clamato juice, spices, and a dash of hot sauce.

Some people compare it to the Canadian Caesar because they both call for clamato juice.

Plus, they’re both known to help ease a hangover.

But you can use tomato juice instead, so it’s more like a Bloody Mary.

Either way, the Michelada is different because it uses beer, not vodka. That means it’s lighter and has a bubbly twist.

So if you like drinks with a bit of character and lots of flavor, you should try the Michelada!

Iced Michelada, a Mexican Cocktail on a Salted Rim Shot Glass

Ingredients

If you’re a fan of Mexican food and drinks, chances are you have Tajin and hot sauce on hand.

If not, check out my “What is Tajin?” post to learn more.

As for the rest, this drink doesn’t require anything crazy. So, here’s what you need to make a Michelada:

  • Mexican Lager Beer – It’s bubbly, light, and offers a cool Mexican twist. Any Mexican beers will do, so pick your favorite!
  • Tomato Juice – For a tangy kick. It’s what gives the Michelada its unique flavor and that gorgeous red color.
  • Salt and Chili Powder Rim the glass with lime juice and a blend of salt and chili powder.
  • Hot Sauce – Get ready to turn up the heat! A dash of hot sauce like Tabasco or Valentina is all you need.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – For depth of flavor. It’s a little sweet, a little salty, a just a bit tangy. And it’s a must in a Michelada!
  • Maggi Liquid Seasoning – This is the secret weapon! It adds an umami punch that takes the drink to a whole new level.
  • Lime – Freshly squeezed lime juice adds a bit of sourness that perfectly balances out the sweetness and the heat.
  • Ice cubes – Last but not least, don’t forget the ice.

How to Make a Michelada

To make this drink, you pretty much just mix everything in a glass and serve.

But it’s just not complete without a zippy rim!

  1. Cut the lime in half. Squeeze the juice from one half and keep the other half for garnish later.
  1. Mix salt and chili powder in a flat dish. Grab that juicy half-lime you’ve got, and run it around the rim of your glass.
  1. Dip the rim into the spicy salt mixture. Voila! You’ve got a beautifully rimmed glass ready for the magic to happen.
  1. Add ice to a glass, then pour in the rest. Once the clamato juice, lime juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and Maggi seasoning are in, carefully mix with a long spoon.
  1. Slowly add the beer. Pour until your glass is about three-quarters full. Then give it a gentle stir.
  1. Garnish with the reserved lime half. Stick it on the rim of your glass, or float it on top, and your Michelada is now officially Instagram-worthy.
  1. Finally, give it a taste. Need a bit more hot sauce? Maybe a dash more Maggi seasoning?

Remember, it’s your Michelada, so adjust the flavors until it’s just right for you.

Tips & Tricks

Try these tips, tricks, and fun variations to make your Michelada the talk of the party!

  • Choose the Right Beer: Go for a Mexican lager that’s light and crisp. Brands like Modelo, Corona, or Pacifico are all great choices.
  • Spice It Up: Don’t be afraid to play with the heat level. If you love spicy foods, go ahead and add an extra dash of hot sauce.
  • Fresh is Best: When it comes to lime juice, fresh is always best. Bottled lime juice just doesn’t have that same zing.
  • Salt the Rim: That chili-salt rim isn’t just for looks. It adds an extra punch of flavor.
  • Try Some Variations: Add a splash of orange juice for a citrusy twist. Or use a blend of clam juice and tomato juice.
  • Make it a Mocktail: If you want to enjoy a Michelada without the alcohol, just swap the beer for a non-alcoholic beer or sparkling water. You’ll get all the flavor without the booze!
  • Chill Your Glass: This one’s simple but makes a world of difference. A cold glass makes your Michelada extra refreshing.

  • Garnish: Level up your drink with lime wedges, celery stalks, slices of cucumber, some juicy fruits, or even Mexican candy.
  • Snacks: Try it with Totopos or Chicharrones De Harina. It’s a match made in snack heaven.
  • Mexican cuisine: These Mexican beer cocktails are perfect with a meal. Try them with Carne Asada Tacos, Birria, Seafood Tacos, or Ceviche.
