Supreme Pizza Toppings

Supreme Pizza Toppings: Pepperoni, Bell Pepper, Mushrooms and Red Onions

If I could eat pizza every day, I would. Does anybody else feel the same?

To me, the perfect day involves spending time with my family and friends at home, eating supreme pizza… lots and lots of it.

Seriously, I can’t get enough of it. What’s not to love? Loaded with cheese, meats, and veggies, it’s rich, savory, and a bit spicy – it’s everything you can ask for in a meal.

My only gripe about it, though, is how expensive it is, especially for people like me who want it every day. No judging!

So I figured, why not make supreme pizza at home? It’s more fun, affordable, and you get to pick the toppings! If you love pizza like I do, I suggest you do the same.

Wondering what toppings go on a supreme pizza? It varies from one pizzeria to the next. Some of the most popular toppings include pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms. But in Australia, a supreme pizza can include pineapple as well. Yum!

Without further ado, here are 10 toppings that will take your pizza over the top!

Pepperoni Pizza

1. Pepperoni

You can’t go wrong with a classic! Pepperoni is perhaps the most iconic pizza topping there is, and for good reason.

The tasty Italian sausage is made from finely ground beef and pork. It is then cured to achieve its distinct flavor.

These small red rounds of meat are a real flavor bomb. It has the perfect balance of salty and spicy, and a little bit of acidity.

Have you ever wondered what makes it so orange, though? Don’t worry, it’s nothing harmful — it’s just paprika.

Homemade Italian Sausage

2. Italian Sausage

Supreme pizza is all about the meat, so here’s another one for you: Italian sausage.

Best of all, there are many varieties to choose from. Keep it sweet and savory or make it extra spicy. Whichever suits your fancy.

Most pizzerias use pre-cooked Italian sausage for safety purposes. But, if you want that authentic flavor, use the raw kind!

Here’s a tip if you’re using raw sausage: pick a leaner one. Sausages with 15 to 20% of fat gives a nice balance of flavor to your hearty pizza. Plus, it’s a healthier option, too!

Just be sure it’s cooked all the way through. While we value flavor, safety is still the top priority!

Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

3. Mozzarella Cheese

Mozzarella cheese is what brings pizza to life. It’s no Cowabunga without mozzarella. Take away every topping except for this milky, ooey-gooey string cheese!

Out of all the cheeses, mozzarella is the best one for pizza. Its elasticity is like no other! It’s the one responsible for those drool-worthy stretchy strands whenever you pull out a slice.

And when it’s baked to perfection, it transforms into that brown, bubbly melted goodness we all know and love.

Chopped Green Bell Peppers

4. Green Bell Peppers

Green bell peppers are what makes a pizza supreme.

It’s fresh, crunchy, and adds a pop of color to your pizza! Just picture those beautiful green strips against the red marinara, yellow cheese, and orange pepperoni. It’s love at first sight!

However, not everyone enjoys the pepper’s mild, bitter flavor. If that’s you, I suggest you roast it in the oven first.

Roasting releases the natural sweetness of the peppers and cancels out the bitterness.

Ground Beef in a Bowl

5. Ground Beef

When it comes to pizza, the meatier, the better. At least that’s how I feel! Finely ground lean beef is another perfect meat addition to supreme pizza.

There are three types of ground beef to choose from —  sirloin, round, and chuck. Be sure to get the one that has 15% of fat or less!

Sirloin may be the leanest of the three, but it’s also lacking in moisture. Ground chuck is the best cut, in my opinion, because it has that perfect balance of fat and flavor.

Ask your butcher to grind your beef coarsely to get those beautiful juicy chunks.

Black Olives

6. Black Olives

Black olives are another staple on my pizza. Take note: black, not green.

Fun fact: unlike green olives, the black ones are ripened artificially. It’s what makes them oilier than their green counterparts. To get rid of the bitterness, they are cured in a lye solution.

The results are firm and slightly earthy black olives. You know, the ones we love on pizza!

And, they’re healthy, too! They contain monounsaturated fat, which is good for the heart. They are also high in antioxidants that fight against inflammation and stress.

Diced Ham

7. Ham or Bacon

Some people prefer sweet ham on their pizza, others like bacon. I choose both.

There are two primary ham varieties you can choose from. You have country ham that’s cured for 61 days, and city ham that’s been fully cooked.

Whatever your pick is, the important part is to have it sliced into paper-thin pieces. It’s what makes it even more flavorful!

As for bacon, you’ll want to use the sweeter, juicier version. Belly bacon is life, but with pizza, Canadian bacon is the winner.

Bowl of Mushrooms

8. Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a tender and earthy pizza staple.

For supreme pizza, you can use either button mushrooms or baby portobellos. Whatever you choose, though, do not use raw mushrooms!

Mushrooms have a high water content, so if you add them pre-cooked, you’ll get a soggy, mushy pizza. Yikes.

To avoid ruining your pizza, saute the mushrooms beforehand.

Red Onions

9. Red Onions

To give your pizza a nice kick, add some red onions!

Red onions add a mild sweetness and spiciness to pizza. It tastes a lot like white onions, but red is much more preferable because of its stunning hue!

Yes, they’re full of flavor and color; but did you know that they’re good for you, too? Red onions contain nutrients that fight inflammation, bacteria, and even cancer!

Diced Pineapple in a Bowl

10. Pineapple

Yes, I’m one of those. Quite frankly, I don’t understand why some people don’t like pineapple on pizza! Somebody, please make me understand.

Pineapple adds such a sweet and refreshing contrast to the savory dish. I just love how it releases sweet and tart juices as you bite into it. And that pop of color makes the pizza even more appetizing, too!

If you’re not a fan, I hope I’ve convinced you enough to give it another chance.
