What Is Texas Trash?

Texas Trash is a snack mix made of various cereals (mainly Chex) pretzels, and nuts.

They’re coated in melted butter, seasoned with salts and Worcestershire sauce, and baked at a low temperature to make it toasty and super crunchy.

Aside from the varying levels of crunch from the dry ingredients, Texas Trash also has many different flavors that somehow work really well together.

Besides the butter, salts, and Worcestershire sauce, the mix is also flavored with hot sauce and cayenne pepper to give it a nice kick.

The medley of crunchy, sweet, salty, spicy, and buttery makes the snack seriously addictive.

Texas Trash Ingredients: Wheat, Rice, Corn, Cheerios, Pretzel Crisps and Nuts

Ingredients

Texas Trash is primarily made of different Chex cereals, Cheerios, and nuts. This recipe uses a mix of the following:

  • Wheat, Rice, and Corn Chex – Use all three to give the snack diverse flavors and textures. You don’t have to use all of them, though! Just pick whichever variety you like.
  • Cheerios – Any flavor works.
  • Pretzel Crisps – Aside from the crunch, the saltiness also adds another layer of flavor to the mix.
  • Nuts – An assortment of peanuts, cashews, almonds, and walnuts. Put as many types of nuts as you can find!

The hodgepodge of crunchy ingredients is already fantastic as it is, but it’s made even more irresistible by adding these flavorings:

  • Melted Butter – Everything tastes better with butter. Used unsalted butter because you’ll already add a bunch of salts to the mix.
  • Celery Salt, Garlic Salt, and Salt – The medley of salts brings out the flavors in the dry ingredients.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – For that rich, umami goodness.
  • Cayenne Pepper and Tabasco Sauce – To give the snack a little bit of spice. You can adjust the amount to suit your taste.

How Do I Make Texas Trash?

Start by preheating your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

The snack mix needs to be baked at a low temperature to make the cereals and pretzels crunchier than ever. Toasting the nuts also significantly enhances their flavor.

Next up, prepare the butter seasoning.

Combine the melted butter, celery salt, garlic salt, salt, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper, and Tabasco sauce.

Use a container with a spout for easier pouring.

Then, place the cereals, pretzels, and nuts in a baking pan.

Pour the butter mixture over the ingredients and toss until well-coated. The best way to do it is with your hands!

Be sure the mix is not higher than an inch-thick, otherwise, it won’t bake evenly. Use two baking pans if needed.

Bake the mixture for one hour. You’ll have to stir it every so often to be sure the ingredients are evenly coated with the butter mixture.

Take it out every 15 minutes and stir well.

Let the mixture cool completely and serve. Store leftovers in an air-tight container to keep them crunchy and fresh.

Tips for the Best Mix

  • The great thing about this snack is you can be creative with the seasonings. For instance, you can make the snack extra spicy by adding a dash of paprika or a tablespoon of Buffalo sauce.
  • Don’t sbeautyevalp on the seasoning. It seems like there’s too much salt that goes into it, but remember that you’re flavoring a lot of ingredients here, from the cereals to the pretzels to the nuts. Don’t be surprised if the butter mixture tastes intense! That’s how it’s supposed to be.
  • You can also add or leave out certain ingredients that you don’t fancy. Do whatever floats your boat! Terrific additions include Goldfish cheddar crackers and sesame snack sticks.
  • To make sure the dry ingredients are coated with the mixture, pour the butter in two batches, tossing the ingredients in between.
  • Be sure to stir the mixture every 15 minutes. This will ensure the seasonings are evenly distributed and the ingredients are toasted evenly.
  • Store leftover Texas Trash in an air-tight container. Refrigerate for up to 2 months and freeze for up to 6. Let it come to room temperature before serving.

    • Yes, Kitty, you can mix the liquid in the bowl if you choose! It might even ensure the seasoning is more evenly distributed. Plus, it makes for easier cleanup!
