White Castle Hamburgers Copycat Recipe

With this White Castle hamburgers copycat recipe, there’s no need to hit the drive-thru. When a burger craving strikes, whip them up yourself.

White Castle is a classic burger joint, and it’s iconic for a reason.

Stacks of Mini Cheeseburger or Sliders

Their hamburgers are flavorful and juicy. Plus, their slider size is perfect for a quick snack.

Unfortunately, White Castle is East Coast-only. But with this copycat recipe, you don’t need to road trip to get one.

White Castle Hamburger Sliders

I love a good copycat recipe. Making my favorite restaurant meals and drinks at home for a fraction of the price? Who WOULDN’T love that?

This White Castle hamburgers copycat recipe is one of my favorites. It’s as close to the real deal as possible without visiting the restaurant.

Made with real ground beef patties and plenty of bold onion flavor, they’re phenomenal.

They’re ideal for big group picnics, backyard cookouts, or satisfying late-night fast-food cravings.

What Are the Ingredients in a White Castle Hamburger?

White Castle Hamburgers only require a few simple ingredients:

  • Ground chuck. A good burger needs good meat. 100% beef is the way to go.
  • Plain breadcrumbs. Breadcrumbs help give the patties some depth and thickness.
  • Egg. A single egg will bring some moisture into the patty. It also helps hold everything together.
  • Dry onion soup mix. The O.G. White Castle slider calls for onions. However, soup mix provides a ton of flavor in teeny tiny onions.
  • Water. Again, you need just a little extra moisture, especially to combine the soup mix into the meat. It also helps the meat stay flat when you cook it.
  • Black Pepper. For a bit of extra spice and flavor.
  • Dinner rolls. Dinner rolls are the perfect size for sliders. They’re thick, fluffy, and simply make an ideal bun.

Tips & Tricks

This recipe is fairly simple as is. Here are a few tips and tricks to further streamline the process:

  • Use metal straws for the holes. Ventilation is the key to making White Castle sliders. To get it, you’ll punch holes in the patties. A larger-width metal straw is perfect for that.
  • Shaping tip. Cover the meat with foil, then use a rolling pin to roll the meat out flat. This will ensure the patties are the same thickness and size.
  • Size the patties to your buns. White Castle burgers don’t have a lot of overhang. Shape the patties to match the size of the dinner rolls you’re using as buns.
  • Cook the patties on the soup mix. White Castle cooks their patties on a bed of onions. To replicate that, spread your soup mix and water on the griddle. Then, lay the patties on top.
  • Vary the onions for authenticity. Want your burgers to look (and taste) even more authentic? Use dehydrated chopped onions or sauteed fresh onions. Ensure they are finely chopped.
  • Add toppings. Ketchup, pickles, and American cheese will give you a more classic cheeseburger style.

What Are the Best Buns for Sliders?

I use white dinner rolls for sliders. I love their soft texture, and they’re thick enough to hold your burger patty.

You can also find actual slider buns at most grocery stores. Mini buns will taste more like a regular burger, so this might be the most authentic option.

Some people like to use sweet rolls, as well.

Bring the taste of White Castle hamburgers into your own home with this copycat recipe! One bite of these juicy, flavorful sliders, and you’ll never crave fast food again!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck

  • 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 (1-ounce) package dry onion soup mix

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 24 small square dinner rolls

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the ground chuck, breadcrumbs, egg, onion soup mix, water, and black pepper.
  • Roll the meat mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Mark out your patties in approximately 3-inch squares by making an indent in the meat.
  • Punch 5 holes into each patty so that the meat has some ventilation while it’s cooking.
  • Bake the patties in the oven for about 10 minutes until browned. They should be at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit using a meat thermometer.
  • Drain any extra grease.
  • Cut along the indentations to make square patties.
  • Place 1 patty inside each roll.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • If you prefer, you can use dehydrated, chopped onions instead of the onion soup mix.

  2. These are very good. You can use the best ingredients you can find and get your White Castle fix. Only healthier! Yay! I found an onion soup mix recipe I could put together with things I had on hand. That made all the flavor difference. I used frozen dinner rolls which were yummy, but next time I think I’ll make my own with part whole wheat flour and saute’ some onions to put on top. Thank you so much for sharing!
