Ingredients
Here are the pantry staples you’ll need to make these cloud-like treats.
- Marshmallows: Choose large or jumbo marshmallows. Any smaller and the ratios are off.
- Chocolate: Splurge on high-quality chocolate – you deserve it! Dark, milk, or white, it’s up to you. But remember, cheap chocolate doesn’t melt as well.
- Coconut Oil: It ensures the chocolate melts smoothly and maintains a glossy finish after setting. You can also use vegetable shortening.
- Optional Toppings: Here’s where you can get creative! Try crushed pistachios, toffee bits, sea salt, or maybe even freeze-dried raspberries!

How to Make Chocolate Covered Marshmallows
This 3-step recipe (I don’t count chilling) couldn’t be easier to make. Here’s the rundown:
1. MELT: Microwave the chocolate and coconut oil in 30-second bursts, stirring well in between each spin, until smooth and melted.
2. DIP. Dip the end of the skewers or lollipop sticks in the chocolate and then into the marshmallow. Let it set, then dip the whole marshmallow in the melted chocolate. Let the extra chocolate drip off before decorating.
3. DECORATE. While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle your choice of toppings evenly. Work in batches so the chocolate doesn’t have time to set.
4. CHILL: Place the dipped marshmallows on a lined baking sheet and pop it in the fridge for 15-20 minutes or until the chocolate is set.
When they’re ready, dig in!
Top Tip: Stick the end of the skewers or lollipop sticks into a styrofoam block so the chocolate sets evenly.
Recipe Variations
Doll up your chocolate covered marshmallows with these creative variations.
- Festive Sprinkles: Use colors that match the season or occasion! Red and pink for Valentine’s Day, orange for Halloween, green for St. Patrick’s, you get the idea.
- Contrasting Chocolate Drizzles: Elevate your treats with a drizzle of contrasting chocolate. This not only adds a visual appeal but also introduces a delightful mix of flavors.
- S’mores Style: Dip the marshmallow in chocolate, then roll it in crushed graham crackers.
- Candy Toppings: Try crushed peppermint candy, mini M&Ms, crumbled Heath bars, or chopped Andes mints.
- Pretzel Stick Handles: Use pretzel sticks instead of traditional skewers for a salty crunch. It complements the sweet marshmallow and chocolate so well.
How to Store & Freeze
Keep your chocolate-covered marshmallows fresh and tasty with these storage tips.
To Store: Store the marshmallows in an airtight container when the chocolate is set. Refrigerate for up to a week.
To Freeze: Place them in a freezer-safe bag and freeze for 2-3 months. Let them thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.
